On Sleep and Schedules and Dismal Failure

A few months ago, I wrote that I needed Trey to start waking up earlier (and also going to bed earlier).  Then, a couple weeks later I mentioned that I also had to start implementing a schedule, for sanity's sake.  I theorized that if I could only be a bit more consistent about Trey's bedtime and naptime, everything else would fall into place.

Well, in case you're wondering how all that has panned out: it's pretty much failed miserably.  For one thing, I'm terrible at waking Trey up before he's ready.  I just can't bring myself to disturb him, especially when he's all snuggled up under the covers, perfectly happy to sleep the morning away.

Then, of course, the fact remains that my son is a night owl - and there's nothing I can do to change it.  Even when I succeed in waking Trey up early for several days in a row, he somehow always manages to work his way right back to the schedule he prefers.  One day he'll stay in bed an extra fifteen minutes.  The next day, he'll linger for an additional twenty.  And then, somehow, before I even realize what's happening, he's back to sleeping until 11:00, and going to bed at midnight.

In some ways, this schedule works for us.  I get a TON of work done in the mornings, before Trey wakes up.  And he's generally much pleasanter when no one's forcing him to get out of bed before he's ready. The downside, of course, is that when I'm ready to hit the hay at 10 PM, my son is still raring to go.  You know, because he slept half the day away.

So that's where we stand on the sleeping/scheduling issue: Trey, 1; Mommy, 0.  I'm okay with it, because at the end of the day, I think it's healthier for Trey to live in tune with his body's natural rhythms - no matter how much they may differ from mine.  Besides, I'll have plenty of time to sleep when he's a teenager.  I doubt he'll want me staying up all night with him then.
